ARTWORK REQUIREMENTS

Guidelines For Supplying Artwork

Lake Screen Printing gladly accepts customer provided artwork within these guidelines.
These are general guidelines; our art department can answer specific questions.
The information below will help you prepare your artwork to ensure timely delivery of your
job and avoid additional costs.

Forms of Artwork

Raster Artwork
Raster artwork is an image created of many pixels.  This results in artwork that is not editable, scalable, or able to be separated for spot color reproduction.

Common Raster file formats:

.jpg, .bmp, .psd, .tif, .pcx

Vector Artwork
Vector artwork is an
image created of points
and paths.  This results
in an artwork that is
editable, scalable, and
able to be separated for spot color reproduction.

Common Vector file formats:

.cdr, .eps, .ai, .wmf

Regular Text vs. Converted Text

Regular Text:
Regular text is text that is in the format of the artwork’s original program.  The text
can be spell checked and corrected.  Regular text requires original fonts and font
matching in order to be displayed and printed correctly.

Converted Text:

Converted text is regular text that has been converted to outlines, paths, or curves.
Converted text cannot be spell checked.  However, converted text does not require
original program fonts in order to be displayed or printed.  Converted text is most
commonly used when transferring art to avoid font-matching problems.

Vector Artwork Files

·        Programs that will be accepted are PC CorelDraw 11 and Adobe Illustrator
        (as identified under Formats).

·        Formats that will be accepted are CDR, EPS (true vector) and AI.

o       Artwork generated using Adobe Illustrator must be either saved or
exported as an Illustrator 8 .ai file or a Legacy Illustrator 8 EPS format.

·        Artwork must be submitted at actual size of finished product unless otherwise specified.

·        Vector artwork must be written in Postscriptä language.  Files may not contain
        Postscriptä errors or stray points.

·        Any type set regular or on paths must be converted to Postscriptä outlines (curves).
If future changes to the text will be necessary, the original font file must be either identified
       or supplied with the art.

·        If the vector file contains any raster images, these images must meet the minimum
requirement for resolution when rendered at 100% actual imprint size and may be
requested with the original vector file.

·        Artwork should be designed using PantoneÒ Spot Colors as desired for finished product.

·        All artwork sent electronically should be accompanied with an electronic equivalent
(rasterized bitmap), communicating the desired result of the supplied artwork.

Raster (Bitmap) Artwork Files

·        Program that will be accepted are PC Adobe Photoshop.

·        Formats that will be accepted are PSD, PDF, EPS (raster), BMP, TIF, and JPG.

o       Artwork containing any line art or areas of solid color should have a minimum
resolution of 300dpi (dots-per-inch) and must be sized to 100% or larger than
       the actual imprint size.

o       PDF format should be a minimum of 600dpi as file sizes are greatly reduced
in this format and provide easier transfer of files.

Raster (Bitmap) Artwork Files - Continued

·        The color space of raster files should be in CMYK unless otherwise specified.

·        Raster artwork is not commonly used for screen printing.  Therefore, all artwork
provided in raster format to be screen printed shall be subject to review to determine
        acceptance.

·        All artwork sent electronically should be accompanied with an electronic equivalent
(rasterized bitmap), communicating the desired result of the supplied artwork.

Page Layout/Microsoft Documents Files

·        Quark Xpress, PageMaker, Microsoft Publisher, Word documents, Excel, PowerPoint,
etc. are not acceptable.  Although programs like Microsoft Word and Publisher are
useful tools, they are not capable of producing art files of a quality necessary for imprinting
        purposes.

o       The exception to this is that we will accept Microsoft Word and Rich Text
documents for lists of names such as, for example, Cast Lists.

Acrobat (PDF) Files

·        PDF files created from vector files must be suitable for reverse-conversion
to vector files or for use in the PDF format such that the file meets the quality
        standard for vector files.

·        PDF files created from bitmap files must be suitable for reverse-conversion
to bitmap files or for use in the PDF format such that the file meets the quality
        standard for bitmap files.

Camera Ready Art

·        Camera ready art is black & white laser quality separation. It is clean with crisp
edges and does not require touch-up. The design must be 100% of the actual
size or larger with the % noted. Include a color printout if multiple colors.
